Rationalising fundamentalism

More on how Americans think:

If you've ever been puzzled how a nation of Christians can espouse foreign and domestic policies so counter to the teachings of Christ, then you might want to read this fascinating exchange in SojoMail.

From Oliver Sharpe: Wow! It's scary to see the level of fundamentalism that is popular around the
world today.

I'm now of two minds about this phenomenon. It could be that the rise of
fundamentalism can be taken as a sign of the failure of the secular society to
provide the kind of clarity that many people seek to guide them in their lives.

However, I have recently realised a more optimistic alternative viewpoint. It
may also be that the current rise of *visible* fundamentalism is actually a
sign of just how threatened such fundamental views are in the modern world. The
level of visibility could be a desperate attempt to keep the fundamental views
alive in an increasingly successful secular world.

Hmmm.....

Oli,

I know fundamentalism is popular in the US, but I don't know if it is on the rise. As far as I know, it has been this popular for a long time. Do you have any figures? The best I could find is this.
